What We Do

How we light
older homes in Acton

Measured to your roofline

We measure every run on your Acton home first: eaves, peaks, dormers, veranda fascia. Commercial grade LED strands are then cut to those lengths, so there is no bunching at a gable and no bare corner over the porch.

Verandas and porch railings

Town core lots near Main Street North sit close to the road, so the veranda does the heavy lifting. We wrap railings and columns with GE StayBright LED mini lights and keep the spacing even from post to post.

Clips, never staples

Clips sized to shingles, gutters or trim hold every strand: Shurtape clips on roof edges, Paragon Light and Sound clips on flat and vertical surfaces. No staples and no nails touch old brick, painted trim or wood fascia on an Acton install.

Takedown and free storage

Once the season ends and ice is off the shingles, generally in January or February, we pull every strand down, label it and store it. Those same custom cut runs return to your Acton house next year at no extra cost.

What Acton neighbours say after the lights go up

From The Crew

Old town core
rooflines around Fairy Lake

Much of the Acton town core near Fairy Lake and Mill Street West was built as a mill town, and the houses show it: Victorian brick, steep gables, dormers set into the slope, and deep verandas that run the width of the front. Clear Cut Group plans a Christmas light installation in Acton around those shapes instead of stringing one flat line and hoping the roof reads well from the sidewalk.

Narrow lots close to the street change how we work. On streets like Queen Street there is little room between the veranda and the walk, so ladder footing gets planned before the first strand comes out of the van, using Qualcraft ladder safety euqipment that keeps weight off the gutters. Cords then run down a downspout to a timer on a GFCI outlet, tucked behind a porch post where no one trips on them.

Acton Specifics

Gables, dormers and verandas,
handled one at a time

Steep gable peaks, safely reached

A Victorian gable in the Acton core is steep, and much of it sits out of reach from a ladder set on a narrow lot. We plan footing and anchor points first with Qualcraft ladder safety equipment, then run the line along the shingle edge with Shurtape clips spaced evenly so the peak holds a straight line instead of sagging at the apex.

Dormers get their own runs

Dormers are short, and a strand stretched from one to the next leaves wire drooping across the roof face. We measure each dormer separately and cut Omni commercial wire to that exact length, with Birddog Lighting LED bulbs in the sockets. From the sidewalk on Mill Street East the dormers read as three clean shapes rather than one loose swag.

Veranda fascia and soffit lines

Deep verandas on older Acton homes carry their own fascia line below the main roof. Lighting only the top edge leaves the porch dark under the overhang. We run a second cut to length strand along the veranda fascia and hold it with Paragon Light and Sound mounting clips, which grip flat and vertical surfaces without marking painted wood.

Railings, columns and front steps

Turned posts and railings take a wrap rather than a straight run. We measure the railing, wrap evenly, and keep the spacing the same from one column to the next so the veranda looks deliberate. GE StayBright LED mini lights stay lit when a single bulb fails, which matters on a wrap you cannot reach without pulling the whole run.

No staples, no nails, ever

Old brick, soft mortar and painted trim do not forgive fasteners. Nothing on a Clear Cut Group install is stapled or nailed. Every strand sits in in a clip sized to what it grips: shingles, gutter lip, roof edge or trim. At takedown the clips come off with the lights, and the only thing left on your Acton house is the paint that was already there.

Power, cords and the timer

Older houses in Acton often have one exterior outlet, and it is rarely where the lights are. We route cords along downspouts and porch framing to a timer on a GFCI outlet, and where a run has to cross a hidden path we use Greenlee fish tape to thread it out of sight. Nothing hangs across a walkway or a veranda step.

Mid season check-ins on high peaks

Homes backing onto open ground near Acton Sports Park catch more wind at the peak. Bulbs loosen, a clip lets go, a wrap slides down a post. Clear Cut Group does mid season check-ins, so a dark run on a gable gets fixed rather than waiting out December. If freezing rain or snow sits on your shingles, the install slides to the next clear day and you hear about it in advance.

Takedown when ladders are safe

In Acton that means January or February most years, once the ice is off the shingles and it is safe to put a ladder against the eaves again. We pull the strands and the clips, coil each run, label it by the section of the house it came from, and store it. The same custom cut strands return next season, which is why a second install on an Acton home goes faster.

Most Acton homes in the core need three or four different runs. This is what we use where, from a gable peak down to the railings on the veranda. Every Christmas light installation in Acton starts with these measurements. Clear Cut Group crews carry all of it.

Most Popular Q&A

Acton Christmas Light Questions

Can you light a steep Victorian gable on a narrow Acton lot?

Yes. The steep pitch is the straightforward part; the narrow lot is what gets planned first. We look at ladder footing, the veranda roof and anything in the way on the walk, then set up with Qualcraft ladder safety equipment before any lights go on the house. The gable line is measured, cut to length and clipped along the shingle edge, so the peak holds straight from the sidewalk on Main Street South.

Will the clips mark the old brick or painted trim on my house?

No staples and no nails go into your house. Every run sits in a clip chosen for the surface it grips: Shurtape clips on shingles, gutters and roof edges, Paragon Light and Sound clips on flat and vertical trim. That matters on the older brick and painted wood common in the Acton town core. At takedown the clips come off with the lights and nothing is left behind.

My veranda runs the full width of the front. How do you keep the porch from going dark?

A deep veranda throws a shadow across the whole front, so a single roofline run leaves the porch flat. We add a second cut to length strand along the veranda fascia and wrap the columns and railings with GE StayBright LED mini lights. The porch then reads at eye level for anyone on the sidewalk, not only from the far side of the road. It is a common plan on older Acton homes.

There is only one outdoor outlet on my Acton house. Is that enough?

Usually one is enough. We plan the display around the outlet you have: cords routed along downspouts and porch framing to a timer on a GFCI outlet, and any hidden run threaded with Greenlee fish tape and Omni commercial wire. If the only outlet sits at the back of the house, we say so at the estimate rather than after the ladders are up. Nothing crosses a walkway or a veranda step.

Can you wrap the front yard trees and shrubs as well as the roof?

Yes. Tree wraps and shrub lines get measured like any other run. On lots around Danville Park we wrap trunks and lower limbs, then run a cut to length strand along the shrub bed so the front reads at ground level as well as at the roof. On larger properties out toward Blue Springs Golf Club we plan the cord route back to the outlet before anything gets wrapped.

Do you install Halloween lighting in Acton before the December work?

Yes. Halloween displays go up first, which is why our Acton season starts in mid October. Plenty of clients plan Halloween lighting and Christmas lights in the same consultation, so we measure once and sort out power once. The Christmas install then follows between late October and early December, and the Halloween pieces come down on their own schedule before the main display goes up.

What happens if freezing rain hits Acton on my install day?

We do not put a crew on a steep Acton gable when there is freezing rain or snow sitting on the shingles. The date may move by a day or two, and you get the new time confirmed before anyone shows up in the driveway. The plan, the measurements and the cut strands are already done by then, so only the ladder work gets rescheduled.

Do you work on Acton storefronts and multi unit buildings, not just houses?

Yes. Clear Cut Group does commercial holiday light installation in Acton for plazas, condo entrances and multi unit buildings, including older storefronts along Guelph Street West. Power and access get planned before the first ladder goes up: where the outlets are, when the lot is quiet enough to work, and how the crew reaches a second storey without blocking a door. Crews are uniformed, bonded and insured.
